Why Rick Steves Says Slovenia Is One Of Europe's Most Overlooked Spots

Although it's a smaller country that gets overlooked by its more popular neighbor, travel expert Rick Steves shared his love for the European nation of Slovenia.
Not only did Steves rave about it as a welcoming, safe place for international travelers on his website, but it was also ranked a top destination by National Geographic in 2023.
Steves advises travelers to give themselves enough time in Slovenia to explore" and to visit mid-May to June and September to early October for better weather and fewer crowds.
The country's capital, Ljubljana, was dubbed by Steves as a "vibrant yet relaxing capital." The city blends the best of Germanic, Mediterranean, and Slavic cultures.
In addition to restaurants and markets, the city features the medieval Ljubljana Castle, where visitors can explore the country's history and visit the various shops inside.
Another highlight is Lake Bled, which Steves writes is one of Slovenia's "brightest gems" and a "romantic getaway that once entertained emperors and presidents."
