While some think Paris is the only city worth visiting, France is filled with architectural art. Travel expert Rick Steves shares that his favorite Gothic cathedral is in Rouen.
As a budget alternative to Paris, Rouen rivals the French capital with its famous art and architecture. The city is also home to the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Rouen.
Also known as Rouen Cathedral, the building encompasses all dramatic aspects of Gothic architecture. However, it also incorporates two other styles in its design.
The Rouen Cathedral began construction in 1030 during the Romanesque times. When it was finished, the cathedral featured Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance architectural styles.
Rouen also has a long history, being one of France's oldest cities. The Place du Vieux-Marché, or Old Market Place, dates back centuries and is the place of Joan of Arc's death.
Its rich history has inspired many artists, such as Claude Monet. The Musée des Beaux-Arts features many fantastic pieces and is a free alternative to the Louvre.
