By Cheryl Kochenderfer

VACATIONS

The South Island of New Zealand not only offers plenty of gorgeous beaches, outdoor adventures, and wildlife sightings, it’s one of the safest islands in the world.
Here, you’ll find picturesque beaches, mountains, fiords, and glaciers, as well as happening cities and charming towns. Plus, you can enjoy the area year-round.
Summer is prime hiking time, as all the Great Walks are open. Winter is the best time for snow sports, which you enjoy from June to September.
For a more novel experience, you can check out the Southern Lights or take a tour of the Franz Josef Glacier, followed by a visit to the nearby hot springs.
Some year-round activities include taking a Milford Sound cruise, wine tasting in Central Otago, and visiting the “Lord of the Rings” filming sites.
Although the South Island is safe, you should take some basic travel precautions, such as keeping an eye on your belongings, not carrying excessive cash, and wearing sunscreen.
