Think Twice Before Swimming At This UK Beach

VACATIONS

Beaches in the UK are no less beautiful or worthwhile than sandy spots elsewhere in the world. However, St. Mary's Bay in Kent is one spot you should avoid if you want a swim.
The Environment Agency issued a do-not-swim order in early 2023 due to high levels of harmful bacteria. The agency has since discovered that it is caused by wastewater pollution.
They believe it is a combination of wildlife and dog poop as well as sewage misconnections. While you can't swim, officials have emphasized the beaches themselves are not closed.
The beach may not be swimmable for the foreseeable future, even potentially years later. The water's state also affects the town of Romney Marsh, as tourism levels have dropped.
