The Best Spot In Florida To Experience Coral Reef Snorkeling

VACATIONS

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Florida is the U.S.’s first underwater park. You can only explore it via boardwalks or from inside kayaks and glass-bottomed boats.
As the only living coral barrier reef in the continental U.S., the park is the perfect location for snorkeling. The clear water is a paradise for encountering ancient sea life.
Pennecamp’s mangrove and seagrass areas are the best place to start snorkeling. These shallow habitats host seahorses, lobsters, multicolored sponges, sea stars, and more.
Other great spots include Molasses Reef, a preserve known for its centuries-old greenish-brown coral clusters, and the Grecian Rocks, a snorkeling area sheltered from the wind.
At the park, you can rent snorkeling gear and book boat tours or private boat charters. You can also bring your own boat and use a ramp at the park for a $10-a-day fee.
