Sweat A Little Less At This Lesser-Known And Temperate Maui Forest

Makawao Forest Reserve, perched on the slopes of Haleakalā above Olinda in upcountry Maui, Hawaii, offers a lesser-known treat for travelers, especially those interested in hiking.
The reserve has several trails to explore, and hikers will see lush greenery shaded by pretty pine, eucalyptus, and red-blossomed native ohia lehua trees with a rich history.
The shade makes the forest perfect for tourists trying to escape Maui's heat, with temperatures that range between 64.4 degrees and 87.8 degrees Fahrenheit.
The Kahakapao Loop is the most popular trail, but there are shorter routes as well. The Secret Trail is a short single-track trail, while the Tweener Trail is preferred by bikers.
The micro-climate at 3,000 feet and the varied terrain is a hiker's dream — you'll be challenging yourself just enough without the scorching sun beating down on you.
While the Makawao Forest trails are well-marked, it can still be dangerous. Stay on the trail, have a fully-charged phone, and pack essentials like water and a first aid kit.
