VACATIONS
The iconic Royal Mile in Edinburgh, Scotland passes through a centuries-old castle, towering medieval buildings, and lots of tourist attractions, statues, performers, and shops.
TV host Rick Steves did the Royal Mile trek for his show "Rick Steves' Europe" in 2009 and declared that "there's no better introduction to Edinburgh" on his website.
If you follow in Rick Steves' footsteps, you'll begin at Edinburgh Castle. The structure is the historical seat of Scottish royals and served as the site of many battles.
Next, you'll descend into the Old Town, which dates back to the 1600s and boasts high stone buildings, and pass by the glaringly modern Scottish parliament building.
Finally, you'll arrive at the Palace of Holyroodhouse. The final stop on the Royal Mile has ties to many Scottish heroes and was the home of multiple kings and queens.
The Royal Mile is packed with things to see, eat, and buy. Steves suggests stopping for a whisky, particularly from Cadenhead's, a distillery that was established in 1842.
