The New York City suburb of Yonkers is a great alternative if you want to avoid pricey Times Square tourist traps and crime-heavy neighborhoods common in the Big Apple.
Yonkers is less than 20 miles northeast of New York City and features everything from beautiful outdoor spaces and historical sites to vibrant shopping and dining destinations.
In the heart of Yonkers lies Untermyer Park & Gardens, a fairytale-like wonderland of greenery with a vibrant Rhododendron garden, peaceful ponds, and trickling waterfalls.
If you're an art and history buff, check out the Hudson River Museum. There are also plenty of options for shopping, such as the Cross County Shopping Center and Downtown Yonkers.
