VACATIONS

On the coasts of New Hampshire, luxury thrives quietly in line with tendencies toward modesty and frugality. This keeps low-key towns like Rye off the over-beaten tourist path.
Rye is the second most expensive place to live in New England and features many private mansions, including the 1895 George L. Allen summer "cottage."
Wentworth by the Sea in New Castle is a large and luxurious hotel with distinctive towers and a mansard roof. It has an 18-hole golf course, clay tennis courts, and a spa.
Rye also has luxury dining experiences. The Carriage House in Rye offers tune-ups of classic New England dishes, and a steakhouse called Library has fed seven presidents.
Rye hosts two public beaches, Wallis and Jenness, that feature views of the Isles of Shoals. The town also hosts Rye Harbor State Park, a great spot for fishing.
