Can You Get Through TSA With Ice? Here's The Secret

By Jenna Busch

VACATIONS

Since ice isn't technically a liquid, at least temporarily, you can bring it through the airport security line, but it must be completely frozen when you go through.
You might need ice when you're traveling with perishable food. The ice cubes or ice packs must be completely frozen without any liquid at the bottom of the container.
It may melt a bit on the plane, so we recommend an ice pack in plastic — when it does inevitably melt, it's contained. Just make sure those packs are frozen for your return trip.
For dry ice, the TSA says it needs to be "properly packaged (the package is vented) and marked." You are limited to 5 pounds of dry ice.
