- In 2018, Juan moved on to OC Weekly, where he became a freelance reporter, focusing on concert reviews, artist interviews, and local travel tips.
- He's traveled all over California, Baja, Mexico, El Salvador, and Costa Rica, looking for the perfect surf spot and amazing hole-in-the-wall restaurants.
- From 2013 to 2017, Juan wrote for LA Weekly and OC Weekly, scouring every bar and music venue he could find in the LA/OC area and writing about it.
Experience
Juan has worked as a professional art and culture writer for over a decade. He got his start at LA Weekly as an intern after sending an unsolicited email in 2013 asking them to hire him so he could get college credit. He had his first by-line next to Henry Rollins's in LA Weekly's print edition, Vol. 35, No. 39. After OC Weekly, he landed at Flood Magazine and founded his music blog, JJ Blogazine, where he has been writing about music and occasionally taking photos of live concerts ever since. Juan joined Static Media as a news writer in 2024, putting his expertise in finding cool, weird places to enjoy art, music, and nature to good use.
Education
Juan has a bachelor's degree in creative writing from Cal State Long Beach, a copyediting certification from UC San Diego, and a digital marketing certification from UC Berkeley.
