This Underrated And Charming Florida Lake Town Is A Must-Visit

Visitors to Florida are undoubtedly drawn to the Sunshine State's best beaches and diverse attractions. However, Florida also has an array of small towns that are ideal for a quiet getaway. This includes DeFuniak Springs, which began as a railway and resort town in the late 1800s. Ultimately, this Walton County destination gained notoriety for its Chautauqua Hall of Brotherhood. For decades, the institution was the meeting ground for the Florida Chautauqua Assemblies.

The Chautauqua movement was known for providing the masses with education and entertainment. That said, the Chautauqua Hall of Brotherhood is located on the banks of Lake Defuniak, a unique circular body of water at Chipley Park. Lake Defuniak (pictured) and Chipley Park should not be missed during a visit to DeFuniak Springs. Visitors can fish, boat, and take in the scenic views. In addition, swimming is allowed from March 1 to September 30.

Given DeFuniak Springs' storied history, visitors are encouraged to take a self-guided walking tour of the town's many historic sites related to the Florida Chautauqua Assemblies. These can all be found near Chipley Park. Notable stops include the Walton-DeFuniak Library, the oldest library in Florida. You can download a walking tour map online. When you're done with this activity, head to Main Street. This is where you'll find all of the action in town.

Explore DeFuniak Springs

Staying true to its small-town charm, DeFuniak Springs' Main Street is also its downtown area. Here, you'll find several quaint stores and boutiques, including Nook & Cranny, a consignment shop filled with vintage treasures; Anita's Half & Half, a used bookstore; and All Things New, which sells clothing, decor, gifts, and more. At the time of this publication, Main Street also hosts a farmer's market every Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon. However, there's more to explore outside of Main Street.

For wine enthusiasts, Chautauqua Vineyards & Winery offers free wine tastings daily from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. No reservation is required, but they can only accommodate up to six people at a time for their tastings. Visitors can pack food and dine in the winery's outdoor area. Chautauqua Vineyards & Winery also has an array of beverages for purchase, such as wine flights, wine slushies, and mimosas.

For more information on DeFuniak Springs' history, visit the Walton County Heritage Museum. Housed in a historic train depot (pictured) from the 1880s, the museum displays local artifacts and exhibits regarding the Florida Chautauqua Assemblies and Walton County. The Walton County Heritage Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. There is no admission fee.
